If you have difficulty walking and getting around, or are worried about falling, there are so many products available to help.
A walking stick is often the first recourse to give that extra stability. However, a walking stick that is suitable for one person may not necessarily be the best for another – take time to ensure you choose a walking stick that is right for you. It should feel natural in your hand and, most importantly, should be set up properly for you. A properly fitted walking stick will ensure you avoid moving the body from one side to the other (leaning into or away from the stick), as well as not lifting your shoulder or bending your elbow.
There are many smart and attractive sticks to choose from. Some sticks are adjustable and some fold to fit easily into a bag, combining practicality with style. The most popular walking stick is the one with a leaf shaped handle, designed to spread the weight evenly over the hand ensuring it is comfortable to hold. This type of stick is right or left-handed so you will need to decide which hand will hold it.
A single walking stick may sometimes cause its own problems over time, i.e., generating or emphasising a weakness in one side. Consider your physical condition. To help ‘even up’ balance in the body, or if you are forced to rely on regular support, it may be worth considering a walker instead of a walking stick.
Again, there are many different styles of frame or walker available. Walking Frames have rubber feet and need to be lifted, making them impractical for outdoor use. Four-wheel walkers are easy to use and give the most even support. They have a seat which allows you to rest and therefore walk further without as much discomfort. They usually have a storage compartment, so there will be no need to haul heavy shopping bags on your arms.
Before using your stick or walker, it is important to ensure it is set up properly. At Living Needs, we will always ensure your chosen walker or walking stick is set up for you, ensuring effective stability and support.
