Age is but a number, but being 60 or over means you may qualify for a VAT exemption. Many people are unaware that there are VAT reductions on lots of goods for the over 60’s, and if you have a long term illness or are registered as disabled, then you may not have to pay VAT at all. David Walter Mobility Specialist from Home Solutions outlines how the scheme works
“If you are aged over 60, and need certain mobility equipment installed in your home, you can benefit from reduced rate VAT, currently 5% rather than 20%. The 5% VAT rule is a huge benefit to those people who are adapting their homes to meet their needs now and into the future.
These are the items to which the reduced VAT rate can be applied, but please note that you need to have them installed – supply only does not qualify for the reduction:
- grab rails
- ramps
- stairlifts
- bath lifts
- built-in shower seats, or showers containing built-in shower seats
- walk-in baths with sealable doors
The installation has to be in your own private home, or one you share with friends or relatives; residential care homes do not qualify. It isn’t necessary for you to pay for the equipment yourself, it can be provided by someone else, e.g .a family member, housing association or any other organisation.
In addition chronically sick and disabled people, no matter how old, can qualify for VAT exemptions – this means they pay no VAT at all. This is applicable on a range of goods and services and you do not need HMRC’s permission or a doctor’s note to be eligible. You also don’t have to be registered as disabled to qualify. If you have a long-term illness or a disability and are buying products you need because of your condition, you may be able to make these purchases entirely exempt from VAT – a 20% saving. You just need to complete a written declaration form to the supplier to prove you are eligible. “
