Disabled Facilities Grant – St Ives, Cornwall
Following up on the initial enquiry from the Geberit AquaClean care manager on behalf of Mr S., the client in St Ives, Cornwall. Instructions were placed by his occupational therapist at Cornwall Council, to replace the existing WC unit with a shower toilet to assist the client’s use as a wheelchair user.
On attendance as planned, our fitters discovered the existing flooring to be defective and causing water damage to the floor boarding and a potential hazard for Mr S’s manoeuvrability. Mr S. also explained he also had problems with the bathroom accessibility caused by the inward opening of the door.
Revised Action
Following our discussions with the keyworker and occupational therapist, giving our best recommendations to improve the situation for Mr S., we arranged for our fitters to return to St Ives to remedy the problem. We removed the existing floor covering to make safe with replacement slip-resistant vinyl flooring throughout the bathroom, installed a Geberit AquaClean shower toilet and new sliding door enabling a wheel chair friendly, clear unobstructed access for the client.
Mr S. tells us he is delighted with his new loo and can’t praise Home Solutions SW enough for sorting everything out so quickly.
What is a Shower Toilet?
Also called a bidet, shower toilets have been a common bathroom feature for a long time throughout Europe and Asia but have only started to become more common in the UK in recent years. Lately their benefits have gained interest with a substantial increase in internet searches as an aid for individuals with specific hygiene and mobility needs.

Finally, it is less wasteful. The manufacturing and distribution processes used to make toilet paper requires a lot of trees (15million annually), energy (17billion kW) and water (473 billion gallons). In the UK, we get through 1.3million tonnes of toilet paper each year. Using a bidet eliminates the need for toilet rolls, meaning you will produce less waste and save money on toilet paper.
